If you live in Alaska and have a Miami theme with wicker, it’s just not going to work. When someone loves a place so much they decorate their house fully from another location it fells forced and contrived. A homes decor needs to be authentic and provoke a sense of where you are. Themed rooms can also be tricky to pull off because if you do everything in the theme, like a southwestern or beach style it will have a juvenile sense about it, creating a more animated than real space. (Remember Elvis’ jungle room?)
Instead of doing an entire room with an out-of-place theme, use themed accent pieces. Use accents to incorporate the look you enjoy without being overwhelming. If you have a house in the mountains and love the beach, display a collection seashells or coral in the bookcase instead of designing an entire beach style room. Subtly is always best!
